Please tell us about yourself and why you are interested in food allergies, gluten sensitivity, celiac disease.
I launched into the food allergy world upon the birth of my second child. During the process, I have found that I also had unaddressed food sensitivities! It has been a learning experience for everyone in our family!
Please tell us about your business.
I own the site VegetarianMamma.com I share gluten-free, nut-free, vegetarian recipes that are often free from other major allergens. I do freelance work for food allergy brands and I am a contributor for Gluten Free and More Magazine.
Describe a challenging experience you had related to food allergies.
Over a year ago, both of my children “outgrew” their life threatening nut-allergies. Both had negative blood and skin tests. The allergen was undetectable in their blood tests. They completed an oral challenge in the hospital. A year later, the almond allergy came back for one of my children. It came back much more severe than the first time. My lesson learned, though it was a huge heart break for our family, we have been down this road before. “Together we can handle anything.”
Describe a rewarding experience you had related to food allergies.
Being able to help ONE person is enough! It keeps me going! Right now, I am in the trenches of “food allergies and school.” It has been great to get help from others and to share my experiences!
What motivates you to do what you do?
The community! I want to help others!
Do you have a go-to resource? If so, what is it and why is it useful?
Really, I rely on our community! I can send out a question to our community and people are very willing to help!
What do you wish other people knew about food allergies and what’s one action that can be performed to increase knowledge and awareness in the general population?
I’d love others to think about their actions. Sometimes actions can exclude children. This impacts them greatly. Please include, not exclude. If you aren’t sure how to make an activity safe for a child, just ask.
What advice would you give to someone just embarking upon this journey?
Find a support system. While it may be tough at the beginning, soon you will be a pro!
Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
Sometimes this food allergy world can be challenging, but with all the resources out there it is possible to navigate your way. When your road gets bumpy, just slow down and take it one step at a time. You got THIS! 🙂
