A different kind of transformation…. The picture on the left is one of the hardest days of my life & the picture on the right is one of the happiest! 💗 May is Celiac Awareness Month, so I figured it was the perfect opportunity to share my story…. Growing up I had a lot of health issues. In high school I was 95 lbs, had trouble gaining weight, was anemic, vitamin deficient, and was losing my hair. I constantly struggled finding the energy to make it through most days and was frustrated that I felt so exhausted when I was getting plenty of rest the night before. For 7 years this went on, throughout those 7 years I got put on multiple different medications & got diagnosed with multiple different illnesses. Finally, in 2017…. 2 days before I got married, I got a diagnosis of Celiacs Disease. For those that are curious, celiacs disease is an autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. This damage can cause a wide variety of health issues. The only treatment as of now is a lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. People living gluten-free must avoid foods with wheat, rye and barley, such as bread, pasta, and beer (good thing I hate beer 😝) . Right after my diagnosis, I cut ALL gluten out of my diet. This meant avoiding gluten while on our honeymoon which was tricky. However, Matthew was SO supportive and has been throughout this entire process of trying to figure out how to live a gluten-free lifestyle. Since the day I got diagnosed, he’s avoided eating gluten when we’re together and he doesn’t bring any gluten containing food inside the house so we can prevent cross-contamination. There’s been tough moments trying to navigate through life with Celiacs, but I have such an incredible support system who make the bad days not so horrible. Since being gluten-free I have noticed a night and day difference. I was finally able to gain weight, my hair has gotten thicker & fuller, I’m no longer anemic, and I have energy to get through each day. I’ve had a few unintentional set backs from getting cross-contaminated, but each day is a new day to heal, grow, and learn as much as I can to help other people.

Elijah’s Echo is an initiative designed to raise awareness of the importance of anaphylaxis/ severe food allergy education and safety as well as asthma w/allergies Elijah’s Echo has been born of the tragic incident that occurred in a New York City Pre-K school/Daycare center on November 3rd, 2017. The incident of which, soon after caused my son Elijah to pass away. Despite the school having documented his severe allergy to dairy products, an adult employee had fed my son Elijah-Alavi a grilled cheese sandwich. Following the incident, Medical professionals worked on Elijah he was going into anaphylactic shock. The school had failed to report what Elijah had been fed. It’s food allergy awareness week. • I’m realizing that people often see me as a food allergy advocate, for my son, Bowan + others with food allergies. • Honestly, I just share openly about life with food allergies because, that was all I was craving when Bowan was first diagnosed as a toddler. • Honestly, if I could share anything during #foodallergyawarenessweek + #celiacawarenessmonth it would be people + families living with food allergies + Celiac, we just really need your ✨compassion✨ We are often misunderstood. We often don’t feel supported. Sometimes we are totally left out. Sometimes we don’t feel safe. Sometimes we are hungry even when food is available. Sometimes we need people to take a risk to step into the really hard side of food allergies + learn the signs of anaphylaxis + commit to helping us if it comes. • We are all alike. Yet, we are different. Life with food allergies is complex at times + your compassion truly changes our lives. 🖤🖤🖤 • • • • #honestlyparents #kidsforreal #letthekids #teammotherly #ourcandidlife #theartofchildhood #lovingtheordinarymoments #magicofchildhood #pixel_kids #wildandbravelittles #bestofmom #dpmagfaves #siblinghoodlove #motherhoodsimplified #clickmagazine #candidchildhood #littlefierceones #childhoodunplugged #childrenofthemountains #bohokids #darlingmovement #holdthemoments #igerscolorado #honestmotherhood #letthembelittle #umh_kids

In preparation to join me for a morning segment to promote #foodallergyawareness Adrian wrote the following (with some spelling help from his seven year-old big brother). I could not be more proud of my superhero. #AdriansStory —————————————— ‘Hi, my name is Adrian. I am 5. I have food allergies and carry my epi pack around everywhere I go in case of an emergency. I always keep my hands to myself and wash my hands just to be safe. If I don’t feel well I go tell a grown-up right away’ ——————————————————- #tealtakeover #turnitteal @foodallergy #foodallergyawarenessweek #foodallergymom #candidchildhood #anaphylaxisawareness #boymom #our_everyday_moments #honestmotherhood #proudmom #nothingisordinary #motherhoodunplugged #momlife #foodallergies

Today is the first day of Food Allergy Awareness Month. @redsneakersforoakley ❤ If you wear them? Tag away… #redsneakersforoakley ❤ Sarah Jessica has been an advocate about peanut allergy, and specifically the emergency EpiPen (due to her son’s peanut allergy). This cause is very, very dear to my heart. So if you own a pair of red sneakers/trainers/shoes this month? Get tagging for Oakley ❤ Never forget.
